Campaign Challenge

May, 2009

Fundraising  Our campaign commenced with a leadership gift of $100,000 from Brother Martin Woodall this Spring.  We have now obtained pledges of more than $510,000 as of the beginning of May.  We will need to increase that total to $750,000 within the next three months in order to complete the project on schedule.  The money raised so far has come from only 64 individuals.  With more than 1,400 living alumni, we have a tremendous opportunity to reach our $750,000 number by this summer.  We are ultimately aiming to raise $1 million dollars to ensure the long-term control and fiscal stability of the house.

Financing  In April, we were able to negotiate an agreement to close our construction loan with Centra Bank of Morgantown and obtain partial funding of the loan.  Our loan funding is contingent upon meeting fundraising benchmarks – so everyone’s continued donations are critical. The bank has agreed to fund the loan based upon a formula of one dollar of funding for every forty-five cents of pledges confirmed with the WVU foundation.  Our contractor is paid current for the work performed to this point.

Construction   The renovation/reconstruction of the house has proceeded without pause.  The new rooms have been studded and the electrical service is largely installed.  Several renovation photos will be posted on both www.wvuphisigs.com as well as the WVU Phi Sigs Facebook page.    The renovation project consists of a redesigned floor plan for the main house, including removal of the existing stairwell, construction of a House Manager, President, and Treasurer Suite on the Main Deck, and new rooms and additional lavatories on upper decks.  The kitchen and dining area will be relocated to the ground floor of Alumni Hall, and a central stairwell is being constructed in the space between Alumni Hall and the original chapter house, allowing for easier access between the two buildings.  We are also installing new windows.  All of these items will be funded if we reach our $750,000 fundraising goal.    Additional “wish list” items include new kitchen equipment, furnishings, new roof, and new landscape.  If we reach our $1 million goal, these items are obtainable.

Occupancy   Our contractor is on schedule to deliver the completed structure before the start of the Fall semester.  We have leases signed with 30 active brothers, and are formalizing the role of the Resident House Manager.  We are also working to develop an Alumni Big Brother mentorship program.  It is important that we not only provide our current and future undergraduate brothers with a good home, but also with sound leadership and guidance.

What do we need to do? We are only a few months from achieving an incredible goal.  The final push will be to raise an additional $240,000 in pledges, paid over five years or less, to achieve our pledge goal in the next two months.  All donations are tax-deductible to WVU Foundation’s Phi Sigma Kappa fund, and pledges are payable over five years.  Matching gifts, credit card donations, and gifts of securities are all welcome.  All brothers or organizations who make a donation of $672 or more (only $134 a year!) will be permanently recognized in the new house.  Several pledge classes have joined efforts to obtain naming rights on rooms.  Please mobilize your brothers today, and ensure that we meet our goal.    If you have any questions or would like to obtain a pledge form, you can contact the Campaign Committee at contact@wvuphisigs.com.  You can also contact us about naming rights options, corporate gifts, or other questions, or if you made a donation and do not see your name on this list.  Online Donations can be made at: www.wvuphisigs.com   More information and photos can be found at www.wvuphisigs.com.  Please also note that we have a WVU Phi Sigs group on www.facebook.com - we have more than 200 Delta Chapter members, sharing stories and photos.

The Building of a Greater Fraternity Capital Campaign provides and excellent opportunity to link a donor’s name, or a name honored by the donor, or a pledge class with some aspect of the “new” fraternity house or with the “old” living room and Alumni Hall.  This is an excellent opportunity for pledge classes or individuals to collectively obtain naming rights.  Additionally, corporate or business naming rights will be considered on a consultative basis.  Such a name will be held in perpetuity at the fraternity house and will serve as a fitting testament to the honorees:
